Penang Hill Bukit Bendera

Penang Hill / Bukit Bendera visit during Penang Trip

Penang Hill or Bukit Bendera, is our next destination that is not about eating. Finally our stomach can rest. After our delicious dinner at Ah Chui Seafood Restaurant 阿水海鲜, we spent our evening watching beautiful sunset here . Penang Hill is situated in Air Itam as well, so it is just a short drive from the restaurant.

When we reached here, the queue was quite long due to the long weekend holiday. It took around 15 minutes for the queue to reach the ticket counter. Please prepare everyone’s MyKad since MyKad can get cheaper ticket price, RM 10 for adult compared to RM 30 for non-MyKad holder. Please refer to the website of Penang Hill for latest price. There is no admission fee, just the ticket fee for the train.

Penang Hill / Bukit Bendera is one of the must visit place in Penang

An evening at Penang Hill / Bukit Bendera
The gate of Penang Hill / Bukit Bendera, since year 1923. Spot the cannons? During the British colonial period in Malaysia, Penang Hill was used as a retreat.

Up to Penang Hill / Bukit Bendera

The classic transport to Penang Hill / Bukit Bendera
While queuing for our turn to get into the train, we spotted this sedan car that is used to carry the British officers from ground to the top of Penang Hill. Wow, just like what we saw in ancient China drama. This was the mode of transportation before the train. Maybe after 50 years, we will be using floating train?

Our ticket to Penang Hill / Bukit Bendera
Getting our train tickets ready to board the train. The queue is quite long, so bring something to eat or something to play while waiting.

The train up to Penang Hill / Bukit Bendera
And so our train arrived. The last time I was here was 10 years ago. The transportation was something like 75% smaller and 50% slower than this train today.

When going up, the train will stop a few times, not sure for what. Perhaps to rest. Saw this signboard showing we are 457.3 meter above sea level.

Train to Penang Hill / Bukit Bendera
Spotted another train just behind us that is moving on the opposite direction. The train movement is quite fast compared to 10 years ago. We reached to the top in about 10 minutes.

Reached the top of Penang Hill / Bukit Bendera

An evening at Penang Hill / Bukit Bendera
At the top of Penang Hill, the weather is cold. So you can see many pines tree around. Loves pine tree? You will love the Kinabalu Pine Resort at Kundasang. By the way, did you see the Penang Bridge from here?

An evening at Penang Hill / Bukit Bendera
Zoomed in to try to capture the mighty Penang Bridge, but my zoom lens is still not far enough.

We saw this stage at the top of the hill, but too bad there was an event coming up, so they blocked the area for preparation.

View from Penang Hill / Bukit Bendera
The sunset view from the top of Bukit Bendera. Too bad there were too much cloud on that day and the sun was hiding shyly behind them.

David Brown’s Sky Terrace at Penang Hill. Seems like a nice restaurant to sit down and enjoy the view of Penang city and Penang Hill.

Laupoh and me at Penang Hill / Bukit Bendera
Snapped a couple photo on the top of the hill. The weather was cold here but still not as cold until you need to wear a thick jacket.

Shoot a panorama of the view before it start to get dark.

Another panorama from bottom to top instead of from left to right.

After it get dark at night, we start to queue to come down. There were still some people staying to enjoy the night view of the city. The queue was even longer than the queue when we came up. Luckily the new train is quite big, fast and comfortable but we still need to wait for around 30 minutes.

Penang Hill is a nice place to visit for its cold weather and the view of Penang city with the bridge. From the website, there are many activities and attractions available here but we do not have enough time during this trip. The area seems to be quite big according to the map on the website. Here is a direct link to the big map. Perhaps next time when we revisit Penang, we can spend more time here. Perhaps can also stay overnight for the cold weather at this nice looking hotel, Bellevue Hotel. The Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/BellevueThePenangHillHotel

Penang Hill’s opening hours are everyday but you need the train to go up there. The train service is from 6.30 am – 10 pm on Monday to Friday. On weekends or public holidays or school holidays, the train operates from 6.30 am to 11 pm. Besides the train, I also saw people hiking up but I’m not an adventurous person.

    1. Thanks, Amitava.
If you haven’t choose the date, I would advice to visit on weekdays to avoid the crowd, or go to those popular eating places really early. Enjoy!

      1. It was a highlight of my trip. What an awesome evening I spent on Bukit Bendera on 21st March. Loved the amazing panoramic view as well as the refreshing music in David Brown’s Sky terrace.
