Sun Moon Lake (日月潭) at Taiwan

Sun Moon Lake (日月潭) at Nantou County, Taiwan

Sun Moon Lake (日月潭) is one of the must visit tourist spots in Taiwan. We came here after our visit to the Rainbow Village. You can read more about our adventure at Rainbow Village here: Visit to Rainbow Village (彩虹眷村) at Taichung, Taiwan. We actually visited this amazing lake during our previous Taiwan trip in 2013, but that time we took a cruise trip and cruise on the lake. You can read about the trip here: Cruising on Sun Moon Lake (日月潭).

For this Taiwan trip, we chose to take the cable car of the Sun Moon Lake Ropeway. It is a gondola lift that connects Sun Moon Lake with the Formosa Aboriginal Culture Village (九族文化村) theme park. Reads on to find out more of our experience taking the cable car at Sun Moon Lake (日月潭).

Sun Moon Lake (日月潭) is an amazing beautiful lake.

We reached Sun Moon Lake (日月潭) quite early and there were only two tourist buses including ours. Can you see the cable cars in the background of this photo? We are going to ride the cable car to go up to the Formosa Aboriginal Culture Village (九族文化村).

A view of the Sun Moon Lake (日月潭) from the main building
After going to washroom, we walked to the cable car station. On the way up, we saw this view of the Sun Moon Lake (日月潭). This beautiful lake is a very deep lake and it is the largest body of water in Taiwan. It is also the home of the Thao tribe which is situated in Yuchi, Nantou.

From the cable car, we can see this beautiful garden at the Sun Moon Lake (日月潭). Can you see how small the cars are? Do not look down if you are scared of height.

The cable cars of Sun Moon Lake (日月潭) Ropeway
There are so many colorful cable cars at this ropeway. I guess there are a lot of visitors to the Formosa Aboriginal Culture Village (九族文化村) theme park. Directly below the cable cars are mostly forest and you can view the Sun Moon Lake on your right or left side depending on your direction.

Another view from the cable car, with the stunning view of Sun Moon Lake in the background. The lake looks really big from this angle. The lake is measured in area of 7.93 km² and in length of 15.12 km. The depth of this lake is 27 meters (89 feet). Swimming is not allowed here but there is actually a yearly swimming race, the Swimming Carnival of Sun Moon Lake. The race has recorded more than 10,000 of participants.

Waiting for our turn to take the colorful cable car
Here is the waiting place to take the cable cars. I think one cable car can fit around six to eight adults.

We spent around 30 minutes here buying food and souveniers from this shop. But, we bought most of our Taiwan food and souveniers from night market.

Taiwan steamed corn at Formosa Aboriginal Culture Village (九族文化村) theme park
I bought a corn from a nearly stall to fill my stomach before the lunch. In Taiwan, you can see many stalls selling this corn together with all types of Taiwan sausages.

Sun Moon Lake (日月潭)
Before leaving Sun Moon Lake (日月潭) for the next destination, we took some photos for memories around this park. We only spend a few hours here as we want to visit other places of Taiwan.

A tree at Sun Moon Lake (日月潭).
Spotted a nice tree nearby at the Sun Moon Lake (日月潭). The whole area here is actually big, I think at least few days are needed to explore everything here. Perhaps, we will visit other area of Sun Moon Lake (日月潭) again for our next Taiwan trip. Stay tuned for our post about our first day’s lunch at Taiwan.
